Families from Burgenland

| This picture is part of a mural which is in the Rawlins
County Museum at Atwood, Kansas. It was done by Burgenland
descendant, the late Rudolph Wendelin and depicts the pioneer spirit, strength and determination of our Burgenland
immigrants. |

| Thousands of people migrated to the United States from what
is now Burgenland Province in Austria, Western Hungary and the southern
part of the Slovak Republic. This page is dedicated to those that settled,
basically, in Nebraska and Kansas. The migration started in the
early 1870's and lasted through the early part of the 1900's. A
company called, "The Lincoln Land Company", which was part of
the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad in Nebraska, forerunner to the
CB&Q Railroad, was instrumental,
through its agents, in bringing the main bulk of the people to Lancaster
and Saline Counties in Nebraska and Rawlins and Decatur Counties in
Kansas. Many of our immigrant ancestors worked building the Burlington
Railroad west to Denver. These people brought with them their strong
Lutheran and Catholic faiths which they cling to yet today. Although
German was spoken in their households for some 50 odd years, they were
quick to become Americans. Burgenlanders and their descendants have
had a major influence in their communities and have served our country with
distinction. |

Schrammel appointed Burgermeister of Gols |
|

|
|
On 10 January 2007, Johann (Hans)
Schrammel was appointed Burgermeister of Gols. He
replaced the retiring Matthias Achs. All of the
relatives in the United States wish Matthias a long, healthy
and happy retirement and the very best to Hans in his new
duties. |

| The information on this site is the on going result of some
33 years of research into, first the Portsche family, then expanded 15
years ago to include other family lines from Burgenland. The "Descendants
of Johann (Hanns) Portschy" site is a cross reference to this
site and will assist in showing the complex blood line ties between these
peoples. There has been no "guess work" involved in this
research. All information is from official church records, family
histories and other individuals research. There are bound to be
mistakes, therefore, any errors found should be submitted to the
researcher, as well as information or documents that you would like to
have included in the data base. At this time, individual or family
pictures have been omitted. Once all of the information is entered
into the server, and the amount of space is ascertained, perhaps the
pictures can be included. |
